ROLE: CREATIVE CONCEPT, ART DIRECTION & GRAPHIC DESIGN
YEAR: 2025
For my Master's project, I wanted to explore how graphic design can shape experience through space and thoughtful restraint. So I created THE REST, a hotel concept centred around the luxury of nothingness.
More than just a place to sleep, THE REST is a place to step away from the demands of everyday life and rediscover calm through small, mindful acts of being.
The concept centers on the Japanese philosophy of MA (間), where absence holds meaning. It’s the idea that emptiness is a space full of potential. What is left out is just as important as what is included.
To translate the concept into a visual language, the identity uses white space as its primary design element and as an active communication strategy. I created perforated patterns by hand and digitally scanned them, adding a tactile quality. Together with rhythmic typography, the design shapes a visual experience that mirrors the feeling of staying at THE REST.
Within the hotel, the identity unfolds across signage, printed materials, amenities, and a self-published newspaper. It extends into traditional OOH placements that replace visual noise with space, creating quiet interruptions in saturated urban environments.
